FINANCIAL TRANSPARENCY

Trust Is Part of the Mission.

Every donation, grant, sponsorship and partnership represents more than financial support. It represents trust. Organizations that ask communities for support also have a responsibility to show how those resources are managed.

We'd Rather Be Accurate Than Impressive.

We won't publish a number simply because it sounds good. We won't claim a donation accomplishes something unless we have information supporting that claim.

We won't manufacture years of impact history that don't exist, and we won't present estimates as verified outcomes. When information changes, we update it.

Transparency isn't about looking perfect. It's about being accountable.

Where Your Support Goes

Unrestricted Giving

An unrestricted gift gives us flexibility to support organizational and mission-related needs as they come up.

That matters, because not every important need fits neatly inside a restricted grant or campaign: emerging needs, program gaps, outreach, technology and training all still have to be covered.

Restricted Giving

Some gifts are accepted for an approved program, initiative or campaign, for example Holiday for Hope, Stories for Hope, Community Day of Hope or Movies for Hope.

When we accept a restriction, we track and use those funds for the accepted purpose. We only accept restrictions we can properly administer and honor.

How Resources Are Managed

Revenue sources

Support may come from charitable donations, grants, sponsorships, fundraising events, program or service revenue, corporate support, approved in-kind contributions and other lawful revenue. Financial reporting distinguishes these appropriately.

Raising charitable support involves expenses such as venues, payment-processing fees, printing, marketing, equipment, insurance and fundraising platforms. We won't imply every dollar raised becomes direct program spending unless that's actually true.

Programs require more than materials. Costs include staff, training, supervision, technology, transportation, facilities, insurance, outreach, data systems and compliance. Responsible programs require responsible infrastructure.

Oversight involves the Board of Directors, executive leadership, financial staff or contractors, external professionals where appropriate, and internal controls. No organization's financial integrity should depend entirely on one individual.

Controls may include separation of financial responsibilities, spending authorization, bank-account controls, reconciliation, expense documentation, restricted-fund tracking, donation-processing controls and Board review.

Depending on revenue, funding sources and requirements, independent services may include tax preparation, compilation, review or audit. We obtain the level of review required by law, contracts and funders, and post completed public statements when appropriate.

We record donations, provide acknowledgments, track restrictions, protect donor information and respond to donor questions. StrongSteps does not sell donor contact information.

Some proposed gifts — real estate, securities, cryptocurrency, vehicles or complex restricted gifts — require additional review. We maintain conflict-of-interest, whistleblower and document-retention practices, and reserve the right to decline gifts inconsistent with our mission or obligations.

Mission before money. We won't exploit someone's story, exaggerate impact, create false urgency, misrepresent where funds go, pressure people who cannot or do not want to give, or promise results we can't substantiate. Trust is more valuable than any single donation.

Financial Transparency FAQ

Where can I find StrongSteps' Form 990?

Available public Form 990 filings for the applicable StrongSteps nonprofit entity are posted in the Financial Documents section as they become available.

StrongSteps is a growing organization, and some reporting periods may not yet have completed or publicly available filings. We add applicable public filings as they become available.

Annual reports are available through the Financial Documents section when completed.

It depends on how the gift was solicited, designated and accepted. Unrestricted gifts provide greater flexibility; approved restricted gifts are tracked according to their accepted purpose.

Operating responsible programs requires both direct program activities and the infrastructure that supports them — staffing, training, technology, compliance, facilities, insurance and administration. We'd rather report accurately than suggest responsible operations have no cost.

Financial oversight involves organizational leadership and the Board of Directors, supported by appropriate financial professionals and systems.

As financial reporting becomes available, expense information is provided through annual reports, financial statements, IRS filings and other public reporting.

No. StrongSteps does not sell donor contact information. See our Privacy Policy for how information is handled.
